World Tourism Day,  created by 'Unitied Nations World Tourism Organisation'  (or UNWTO) has been celebrated since 1980.  The UNWTO statutes were adopted on 27th September 1970 and so it seemed fitting that this be the day to celebrated World Tourism Day which has been on the list of 'International Observances' since 1980.

As stated in Wilipedia "the purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the intenational community and to demonstrated how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide".
